11 Mulled Wines, Gløggs, and Other Cozy Cocktails

Mulled drinks have been around for millennia. All the way back in the first century, Roman gourmand and OG food writer Apicus wrote of a mixture of white wine with honey, saffron, mastica, and black pepper called “conditum paradoxum,” according to The Oxford Companion to Spirits & Cocktails.
In the medieval-era, there were mulled drinks like Hippocras gyle, which Terry Breverton writes in The Tudor Kitchen, was a combination of galangal, cardamom, cinnamon, grains of paradise, cubebs, and long pepper infused in wine. The drink got its name, he says, due to the bag that was used to filter the spices, “known to apothecaries as a manicum hippocraticum—the sleeve of Hippocrates,” Breverton says.
These days, mulled beverages go beyond wine to include any kind of boozy base that is sweetened, spiced, and, generally, warmed. While cinnamon, allspice, ginger, and black pepper are considered the standard flavoring agents, the 11 recipes below feature a wide range of ingredients, from star anise, allspice berries, and pink peppercorns to citrus, cranberries, mint, and more.

Red Wine-Based Mulled Cocktails
Mulled Wine
Start with your classic mulled wine, starring oranges, red wine, brandy, sweetener, and spices. Doctor it up with cranberries and other fruit, if you’d like.

Glühwein
Mulled wine but make it German. This traditional Glühwein is made with red wine and spiced with cinnamon sticks, cloves, star anise, citrus, and sugar.

Classic Norwegian Gløgg
Made with red wine and warming spices, Norwegian gløgg is a cozy winter sipper with Scandinavian flare in the form of cardamom, raisins, and aquavit.

Mulled Ruby Port with Rosemary and Bay Leaves
It might seem a bit intense to mull Port, but this mulled ruby Port with rosemary and bay leaves omits the sugar, adds in lemon, and dilutes the mix with water to offset the sweetness.

The Nightingale Mulled Wine Recipe
Grenache, brandy, Cointreau and whole spices add welcoming warmth to The Nightingale’s mulled wine recipe. The Minneapolis bar’s version is so popular that co-owner Carrie McCabe-Johnston has had guests call asking about the winter drink as early as October.
White and Rosé Wine-Based Mulled Cocktails

White Wine and Port Vin Chaud
This white wine-based rendition of French vin chaud combines Jacquère from Savoie (preferably) with Port, brandy, apple, dried hibiscus, and a whole host of spices for a bit of extra punch.

Mulled Rosé with Ginger and Grapefruit
A lighter, zestier take on mulled wine, this mulled rosé with ginger and grapefruit is citrusy and aromatic due to the addition of spices like pink peppercorns, star anise, allspice berries, and other nontraditional ingredients.

Mulled White Wine with Mint and Ginger
As the title suggests, this mulled white wine with mint and ginger combines dry white wine with the aforementioned root and herb, along with refreshing spices such as coriander seeds, cardamom pods, brandy, elderflower liqueur, and other delicious ingredients.

Mulled Riesling Spritzer
John Anton developed this mulled Riesling spritzer for North Carolina’s Death & Taxes to bring the flavors of mulled wine into a lighter cocktail. Grapefruit, lemons, rosemary, vanilla bean pods, and other spices brighten it up.
