The Best Boozy Advent Calendars to Gift This Year

There once was a time when Advent calendars were filled with little cardboard illustrations, or, if you were lucky, cardboard-tasting chocolates. Thankfully, we have entered the golden era of Advent calendars, filled with legitimately exciting gifts: jams, lipsticks, teas, perfumes, macarons, and, best of all, booze.

For the uninitiated, Advent calendars can be any shape or size, but they always feature 24 to 25 “doors” meant to be opened every day leading up to Christmas, revealing a festive surprise. (There are also 12-day Advent calendars.) The item has its roots in 19th-century Germany, where Protestants began counting down to Christmas by lighting candles or making marks with chalk on walls or doors. It is believed that the first chocolate-filled advent calendars emerged in the 1950s, and Cadbury launched its own in 1971.

The lavish themed Advent calendars of today—often exorbitantly priced, like the controversial $825 Chanel Advent calendar of 2021—are a far cry from its humble origins. (We’re not sure how 19th-century German Protestants would respond to the sight of a “24 Days of Rum” Advent calendar, but we suspect they wouldn’t love it.)

The annual Costco Wine Calendar tends to sell out quickly, and you can’t purchase it online, but we would be remiss if we didn’t include one of the most coveted wine Advent calendars.
