A Winning Idea for Your Super Bowl Party? Themed Cocktails
Beer might seem like the right pour for a Super Bowl bash. But if you’re committed to a theme—say, choosing a drinks menu inspired by the Philadelphia Eagles and the Kansas City Chiefs—then cocktails actually give you way more to work with.
There are several different drink-planning approaches at your disposal.
You could serve sippers that hail from the final teams’ hometowns, both of which are top-notch drinking destinations.
Or, you could choose drinks decked out in the teams’ colors. This year’s match-up offers room for creativity since there will be red and gold for the Chiefs and green, silver, black and white for the Eagles.
And, when in doubt, never shy away from a good football pun. (Prepare yourself for several drinks with the word “snap” in their names. Sorry, not sorry.) And don’t forget about mocktails and low-abv options.
To save you from doing an internet deep dive, we’ve gathered a wide range of recipes from our archives to suit every kind of drink and theme. Feel free to steal our rationales for the following cocktails, pass them off as your own and be the hero of Super Bowl LIX on February 9. (We won’t tell.)
For Chiefs Fans
Bloody Mary
The classic Bloody Mary is deep red in color, can be piled high with party-appropriate garnishes and delivers a nose-clearing zing thanks to a heaping teaspoon of horseradish. What’s better to keep you up and alert for the big game?

Hibiscus Punch Royale
The large-format Hibiscus Punch Royale will water a crowd—12 thirsty souls, to be precise—and offers a ruby shade courtesy of a sweet hibiscus flower-infused syrup.

The Fireside
Created by famed Kansas City bartender Jenn Tosatto, the Fireside gets its deep maroon color from a hefty portion of Malbec wine and sweet-tart cherry juice. Tosatto tells us it’s super comforting, which might come in handy when the other team scores a touchdown.

Sophisticated Slushie
Frozen drinks may be a bit unconventional for a frigid sporting event in February, but we have a feeling plenty of fans will need some cooling down. The upmarket Sophisticated Slushie, invented at the now-defunct Kansas City restaurant Bluestem, is a riff on both the classic Paloma cocktail and Italy’s famous slushie-style Sgroppino. Sparkling wine aerates the drink and delivers a frothy texture, while tequila gives it a boozy backbone. A few glugs of grenadine lend a rosy-red hue.

County Cork
Dreamed up at Kansas City spot Ça Va, County Cork’s yellow-gold hue conjures images of both teams. Yellow Chartreuse lends a floral and herbaceous quality, while Irish whiskey serves as the foundation. Bubbly Cava lightens everything up and honey syrup brings it all together.
For Eagles Fans

Hell Hath No Fury
Courtesy of the Franklin Mortgage & Investment Co., a bar in Philly’s Rittenhouse Square, the refreshing Hell Hath No Fury cocktail is a riff on a mint julep, but swaps bourbon for blanco tequila and mezcal. (Also the name is a fitting description for the city’s raucous fans.)

Classic Sgoroppino
Not unlike an adult slushy, icy-cold Venetian classic, Sgoroppino, made with lemon sorbet and Prosecco is a terrific palate cleanser for all those wings and nachos. Plus, the recipe is courtesy the Philly restaurant Vetri.

The Merman’s Tail
Made traditionally with Tequila, this version of the Merman’s Tale (also known as a mezcal paloma) from now-shuttered Philly bar In the Valley adds a dose of Punt e Mes, a Piedmontese vermouth with an extra bitter kick that plays up the grapefruit.

The Sin Cyn
Get into the spirit—like you’re sitting in the end zone—with this spirit-forward drink. Created by Paul Dellevigne of Philadelphia’s Red Owl Tavern, the equal parts Sin Cyn cocktail is a riff on a Negroni, but made with Cynar and Scotch.

The Inferno Cocktail
This is one for the team colors. Made with pitch-black charcoal, the bourbon-based Inferno cocktail is finished off with a sprinkle of edible glitter.

The Grasshopper
Bright green, minty and sweet, the Grasshopper—named after the jumpy effect this cocktail yields—is like dessert in a glass and somewhat follows the color theme of the Philadelphia team.

The Tokyo Ice Tea
Another appropriately colored drink, the Tokyo Ice Tea—a citrusy, sour take on a Long Island—is practically neon green thanks to Midori.

The Face Plant
Made with sotol, a Mexican spirit distilled from the desert spoon plant, the Face Plant is for those who like margaritas but are interested in expanding their repertoire. (Let’s hope none of the players wind up tripping on the field, though.) Chartreuse, cucumber and a mint spring finish off the green theme of the beverage.

The Black Russian
A forebear to the better-known White Russian, the Black Russian is simple to make—just coffee, vodka and optional orange bitters—and will keep you caffeinated in case the game goes into overtime.
For Those Who Just Want a Good Game

Oh, Snap!
Snapping a football—get it? Manzanilla Sherry and gin join forces in the Oh, Snap!, a vegetal cross between a citrusy Tom Collins and a classic gin and tonic. The starring ingredient—sugar snap peas—lends a contrasting sweetness.

For the NA and Mocktail Fans in the Crowd

Ginger Snap
Yes, it’s another football pun. Bolstering this zero-proof drink’s suitability for the big game is its origination at The Brick, a Kansas City institution that slings everything from Fluffernutter sammies to classic burgers. Spicy and sweet in equal measure, the Ginger Snap marries fruity pear syrup with warming ginger beer.

A Non-Alcoholic Bloody Mary
If you’re on the west coast, the Super Bowl starts in what could be a brunching hour. So, mix up a non-alcoholic Bloody Mary for a daytime appropriate beverage.

Cucumber-Mint Lemonade
With salty and deep fried foods on the table, a bright and acidic drink is a necessary palate cleanser. This refreshing cucumber-mint lemonade will be sure to please drinkers of all ages at your party.
