Canned Applause: The RTD Wines We’re Loving Right Now
Much like boxed wines, canned wines have gotten much better over recent years. As a result, wine drinkers are buying them in droves. The global canned wine market is currently valued at a whopping $773.4 million, with sales expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 18.3% through 2030.
To put it plainly: The canned wine movement is here to stay.
Convenient to drink just about anywhere, with or without stemware, canned wines are perfect for casual, unfussy summer sipping, ideally outdoors. It doesn’t hurt that canned wine labels have gotten so darn cute, and that many of them are made with lightweight, easy-to-recycle materials. (Plus, for lower-ABV enjoyers, there are plenty of refreshing canned wine spritzers and NA cocktails to put on your radar.)
We asked sommeliers, drink experts and our Wine Enthusiast writers at large to share the canned wines they are loving right now.
Roots Wine Co. Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris
Michael Alberty, a Wine Enthusiast writer at large who reviews wines from Oregon, Washington and other American regions, feels that Roots Wine Co. in Yamhill, Oregon, has been doing canned wine right for years.
“Their non-vintage Klee Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris are consistently excellent, featuring nice acidity and restrained alcohol levels,” he says. “They even smell and taste like the grape varieties listed on the label.”
An added bonus: they look cool. “Their striking labels are a colorful homage to the Bauhaus style of Paul Klee,” Alberty adds.

Barnard Griffin C’est Le Vin Rosé
As for standout Washington wines, Alberty’s favorite cans are rosés. He’s particularly fond of the “pretty in pink” non-vintage Barnard Griffin C’est le Vin Rosé of Sangiovese, which he calls “crisp and berry-licious.”

Underwood Pinot Noir
Oregon seems to be at the apex of the canned wine world. A number of excellent options are coming out of the state. Wine Enthusiast Writer-at-Large Reggie Solomon is a fan of Underwood Pinot Noir. “It’s better than many inexpensive Pinot Noirs you find in a bottle,” he says. “It’s got a straight-forward, medium-bodied taste profile.”

SANS Wine Co. Rosé
SANS aims to offer high-quality wines “sans pretense” in settings where glassware might not be viable. “The wines have regional AVAs like Mendocino, Lake County and Napa and hail from organically and dry-farmed family owned vineyards,” says Alex Wettersten, beverage director at Cavallo Point Lodge in Sausalito, California. Wettersten is particularly fond of the still and sparkling rosé, Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling and Carignan (“with carbonic maceration to make it an easier red to enjoy chilled in the warm weather”).

Birch Block Vineyard Endless Summer Rosé
“I recently had the good fortune to sip on Birch Block Vineyard’s ‘Endless Summer,’ a Cabernet Franc rosé, while visiting British Columbia,” says Alberty, who bought the wine on a whim because of its name. “The fact it smelled and tasted like rose petals, lemon zest and grapefruit was a big, refreshing bonus.”

House Wine Rainbow Edition Rosé Bubbles
Another canned rosé of note is the non-vintage House Wine Rainbow Edition Rosé Bubbles, which Alberty highly recommends. “I also love the fact that I can buy them at the stadium of my local semi-pro baseball team,” he says.

Archer Roose Bubbly
Archer Roose has been a serious success story in the canned wine space, offering accessibly priced cans of low-intervention wines at retailers like Target. Alina Horvath, wine director at Ashore Resort & Beach Club in Ocean City, Maryland, appreciates that the brand’s wines “reflect the traditional profile of each varietal’s growing region in both flavor and style,” she says. Another bonus: the women-founded company is “big on label transparency” and committed to sustainably sourced grapes.

Nomadica Red Blend
Founded by sommelier Kristin Olszewski, Nomadica offers reds, whites and rosés in trendy eco-friendly packaging. The Red Blend is a favorite of Johan Monterrat, director of food and beverage at Four Seasons Hotel San Francisco. “The wines are sustainably farmed and often sourced from small-production vineyards,” he says. “The art-forward cans look cool and feel premium, elevating the entire experience. You are drinking something casual, but it feels carefully curated.”

Djuce Chilled Red
Djuce canned wines boast a minimal carbon footprint—which is why many top eco-friendly producers all around Europe are into them. The cans themselves have an interior lining that prevents the wine from coming in contact with aluminum, so the taste isn’t compromised. Djuce is currently the go-to canned wine brand for Wine Enthusiast Writer-at-Large Aleks Zecevic. The brand’s best-sellers are its chilled red, crispy white and fizzy white. The crispy white is a light-bodied Trebbiano that’s a bit fruity and fresh, while the chilled red is a light, juicy Montepulciano that drinks almost like a rosé.
