The Best Pinot Noir Wines Under $20

Finding a home-run Pinot Noir under $20 is no small feat, but the good news is that it’s far from impossible.

It is often referred to as the “heartbreak grape” for its finicky nature, needing just the right conditions to thrive and express its elegant, nuanced character. That reputation has often meant higher price points, making affordable bottles feel like hidden gems.

However, thanks to increasingly abundant fruit sources, innovative winemaking and changing growing conditions, there’s never been a better time to be a budget-conscious Pinot lover.

Wine Enthusiast Writer-at-Large Tonya Pitts, who reviews wines from California and other parts of the U.S., highlights a key reason for this exciting moment with the notoriously fickle grape. “Producers are creating several labels to offer consumers different price points, so they can enjoy wine anytime,” she says.
But that affordability doesn’t necessarily mean cutting corners. With climates changing and yielding more expressive fruit, even entry-level wines are gaining depth and complexity, elevating both the sense of terroir and the drinking experience without inflating costs.

One of a Kind Aromatics

What makes Pinot Noir so captivating, regardless of its price point, is its signature aromatic and flavor profile. Red fruits—like cherry, raspberry and strawberry—are often layered with earthy undertones of mushroom, truffle and forest floor. Depending on the region, you might also find hints of herbs, spice or minerality.

Old World Pinots, such as those esteemed bottles from Burgundy, are typically more restrained, emphasizing elegance, acidity and terroir-driven complexity.

In contrast, New World expressions—including those from California and Oregon—tend to showcase riper fruit and a more fruit-forward character overall, making them especially appealing to modern palates.

Though lesser-known, the cool climate Pinot Noirs from Australia, also fall into this category, with ripe berry flavors upfront thanks to abundant sunshine. These wines are increasingly being crafted in lighter, more delicately framed styles, says Christina Pickard, Wine Enthusiast’s Australia, New Zealand, England and New York reviewer—and deserve a much closer look.

“Relatively little Australian Pinot makes it Stateside, which is a shame considering how good it is from a number of cool climate regions—and how seriously the Aussies take this variety,” she says of these wines. “But the Pinots that do make it to our shores are top notch.”

Affordable Bottles From Across the Globe

One of those Aussie gems made it to our selection below, which leans heavily on New World renditions. This is due in part to the more favorable conditions for producing high-quality wines at lower price points. But, rest assured, we did find one incredibly affordable bottle of Burgundy to highlight, too.

These fantastic Pinot Noirs, which all ring in under $20 a bottle, is proof that you don’t need a big budget to enjoy a stellar glass of wine. From Australia’s sunny vineyards to the juicy fruit of California, these bottles are a testament to what’s possible when winemakers embrace creativity and care at every price point.

Explore the options and raise a glass to wines that deliver more than their price tag might suggest.
